ECORP’s Senior Biologist, Marin Meza, recently volunteered for the Nature Bowl, an annual, science-based educational program for 3rd through 6th graders in the Sacramento area. Through games, problems, puzzles, and exploration, students gain ecological knowledge and conservation literacy. Teamwork and creativity are encouraged as students rotate through stations in a friendly, educational competition, including Team Problem Solving, Speedy Ringers “game show” style, Nature Relay Activity, Enviromercial Presentation (environmental commercial), and Outdoor Investigation Skills.
The Nature Bowl is run by CDFW staff and volunteers. Marin ran the Team Problem Solving challenge with 2 refuge volunteers and served as a judge for a semi-final event at the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge outside of Sacramento.
Overall, the entire event saw 365 students from 46 teams around the North Central Region who participated in multiple semi-final events over a period of two weeks, and of those semi-final events, 12 teams advanced to the final event held in Sacramento.
