In-Stream Habitat

Stream habitat is a complex web of terrestrial and aquatic environments shaped by the watershed geology, biota, hydrology, and hydraulics. Restoration of in-stream habitat requires a multi-disciplinary team that understands the intricate balance between the habitat and the factors that create the habitat. Human activities (both on the landscape and in the channel) have influenced natural watershed processes which have in turn impacted and degraded in-stream habitat. State and Federal agencies are requiring restoration measures as part of the entitlement process for new projects. A successful in-stream habitat restoration project must develop a holistic approach that incorporates the biological, hydrological and ecological aspects of the riparian system.
